READ ABOUT Akagera National Park
Akagera offers four separate campsites for self-sufficient campers with their own vehicles. Here is a map of Akagera, with the four campsites.
The campsites offer firewood and tents for rental. Tents are available for hire at Reception for the southern sites only. Visitors must bring their own camping equipment and supplies.
Although the Akagera campsites are for self-sufficient travellers in their own vehicles, the activities listed for Akagera National Park are all available at an extra cost.
Credit card payment facilities are only available at the park reception.

Mihindi Campsite & Cafe (north)
3-4 hours from the park's southern main gate. Note that the north gate is for exit only. This campsite near the shores of Lake Mihindi has a vibrant cafe that serves food and refreshments and a picnic area - a popular stop-over during game drives and transfers between the south and north of the park. The campsite has a low-lying electric fence, ablution block with flushing toilets and cold-water showers and barbeque facilities. Tents, mattresses and bed sheets are available for rent, but bring your own sleeping bag.
Muyumbu Campsite (south)
15 minutes from the park's southern main gate. The campsite is high on a ridge overlooking Lake Ihema and Tanzania to the east. The campsite has a low-lying electric fence, bucket showers, pit latrines (no flushing water), rain-water tanks, open-sided communal rondavel shelter and barbeques. Tents are available for rent but bring your own mattresses and bedding.
Shakani Campsite (south)
15 minutes from the park's southern main gate. The campsite is on the shores of the picturesque Lake Shakani. The campsite has a low-lying stone wall, ablution block with flushing toilets, solar-heated showers, and two rondavels with wood-fired barbeques. Tents are available for rent but bring your own mattresses and bedding.
Mutumba Campsite (central)
2-3 hours from the park's southern main gate. Note that the north gate is for exit only. Mutumba is the most remote campsite, located in the scenic, wildlife-rich Mutumba Hills - the highest point in the park. The campsite has a low-lying electric fence, bucket showers, pit latrines (no flushing water), rain-water tanks, open-sided communal rondavel shelter and barbeques.
